The Erie Canal transformed New York State. This presentation provides a general overview of the Erie Canal, its history, construction, the politics, and economic atmosphere that surrounded it.

It was the summer of 1777 and the British were coming from three directions, hungry to subdue Albany. The Loyalists of Old Albany County were rising up to clear the way for the Redcoats.

This lecture explores the career of New York’s first governor, George Clinton, who guided a deeply divided and strategically critical state through invasion, occupation, and internal dissent from 1777 to 1795.
