Program Description

Event Details

Poet and Guilderland resident Susan Comninos will present a four-part workshop on poetry pegged to constrained forms, including the anagram, the sonnenzio, the place-as-person poem (or, the geographical personification poem).  Constrained poetry asks us to be resourceful within certain parameters.  It invites us to break through some of our own barriers as poets, often helping us to create unexpectedly funnier or fuller poems than we might otherwise! Participants will read and discuss representative works including poems by AE Stallings ("Olives"), Kim Addonizio ("Sonnenzio on a Line from Drayton"), and Terrance Hayes ("Pittsburgh").  We'll also experiment with exercises to help craft your own constrained poems, which we will workshop in class.

This four-part series is open to adults, as well as older teens comfortable with feedback and the give-and-take of a writing workshop environment.  Please note subsequent dates for the series.  Registration is limited to 10 people.
