Program Description

Event Details

American History Through Poetry is a course built around a paperback book called 101 Great American Poems, which forms the foundation of this 5-part series. Many poems in the book are familiar works that celebrate an American history familiar to school kids ("Paul Revere's Ride," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; "The New Colossus," by Emma Lazarus as two examples).  We will look at the poems as works of art and as documents of history. We'll also supplement our readings with handouts of poems not included in the book, to provide a perspective on other voices and to explore some of the myths of American history. Instructor Paul Lamar likes to conclude by looking at the poems read at contemporary Presidential Inaugurations because they generally reflect the notion of what it means to be an American at that specific time.

Join us for this thought-provoking discussion!  Registration is limited to 12 people; each person will receive a copy of 101 Great American Poems to keep.  Stop by the Adult Information Desk to pick yours up!
