Traditional gardens and home landscapes have long been simply seen as spaces of beauty and respite—not as habitat. Our home landscapes are important spaces in the larger world—they are opportunities for ecological havens. However, many of our traditional management and design practices make our gardens ecologically barren and inhospitable. In this presentation, we will explore native plants and the important role they play in our ecosystem—what they do and why that means we should be incorporating them into our gardens. In addition, we will be addressing the broader importance of the choices we make in our landscaping and how to design landscapes that are havens not just for humans but for all.
