We are proud to announce that author, TED Talk speaker, and anti-ageism activist, Ashton Applewhite, will appear in person as part of GPL's Carol J. Hamblin Notable Authors Speakers Series. In this program co-sponsored by The Guilderland Library Foundation and the Albany Guardian Society, Applewhite will share why the more you know about old age the better it looks—and why so few people know it.
From childhood on, we’re barraged by messages that it’s sad to be old. That wrinkles are embarrassing, and old people useless. Ashton Applewhite believed these common misconceptions too, until she figured out where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does.
In this lively and provocative presentation, Applewhite explains the roots of ageism—between our ears and in the world around us—how it divides and diminishes us, and what we can do about it. Whether you’re older, or hoping to get there, this talk will cheer you up, shake you by the shoulders, and change the way you see the rest of your life.
The first 25 people to attend the program will receive a free copy of Applewhite's book, This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. The talk and Q & A period will last approximately one hour, followed by a book signing. There will be additional copies available of her book for sale and signing.
