About the Event

Just in time for spring turkey season, this course teaches firearms safety, responsibility, and wildlife conservation. All students must bring completed homework to this in-person, instructor-led, course. Firearms handling and live-fire of firearms will occur during this class. If homework is not completed before the course, you will not be permitted to participate. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Manuals/worksheets can be picked up by calling the Region 4 DEC office, 518-357-2158 to arrange pick up at 1130 North Westcott Road, Schenectady, NY 12306 open 8:30-4:45 Mon.-Fri. You may also call the above DEC number to have a .pdf copy of the homework emailed to you. Plan your time accordingly, as the homework will take some time to complete. If you cannot attend this course, you must cancel your registration.

Course Details:

  • COVID protocol: masks are not required; this may be subject to change
  • DO NOT bring firearms or ammunition!
  • AGE: Students must be 11 years or older to take this course (NY minimum hunting age is 12) or have a signed statement from an adult with plans to hunt in a state with a lower minimum hunting age. Students under 16 years old must have a signed permission slip obtained by clicking: https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/hunteredpermission.pdf A student under the age of 11 who will hunt within the next year in a state which permits hunting at a younger age can sign up for a course if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and if the student presents a statement signed by a parent of legal guardian showing which state the student will hunt and what dates the student will be hunting.
  • TEST: The student must be able to pass the final exam with no assistance other then having the exam read to them.
  • BRING a writing instrument, snacks, and drinks.
  • DRESS for the weather and outdoor conditions in the field and woods.

Cancellation Policies

You must cancel your registration before Saturday, April 8, 2023, at 8:00am CDT.

Age Policy

All registrants for this event must be 11 years of age by April 8, 2023.

Student must be at least 11 years of age to attend the Hunter Education Course, unless he/she will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12 years. Check with the instructor as some restrictions will apply.
