Kim van Alkemade, New York Times bestselling author of Orphan #8 and the upcoming Counting Lost Stars, will join us to discuss Bachelor Girl and her research into Colonel Jacob Ruppert, eccentric millionaire owner of the NY Yankees best remembered for acquiring Babe Ruth from Boston.
Inspired by true events, Bachelor Girl imagines the reason behind Ruppert's 1939 bequest of a fortune - including part ownership of the Yankees baseball team - to an unknown, unmarried, ex-actress named Helen. Bachelor Girl juxtaposes Ruppert's world of baseball and beer brewing with the thriving gay scene in Greenwich Village, home to Ruppert's personal secretary, Albert, as well as the off-Broadway theater scene in which Helen strives for success.
With its rich cast of diverse characters, Bachelor Girl weaves together threads of New York's African-American, LGBTQ, Jewish, Prohibition, and baseball history all while exploring what it meant to be one of the thousands of independent women known at the time as Bachelor Girls.
