The 17th century in Holland witnessed extraordinary innovation in science, commerce and artistic expression, and Johannes Vermeer was arguably one of the most significant painters of this Dutch Golden Age. This talk, led by art educator Janet Cohen Mandel, will illustrate the life of Vermeer through examination of some of his most important and iconic works. The artist's paintings show a remarkable purity of light and form, peace and tranquility -- think of "Girl with a Pearl," which inspired author Tracy Chevalier's blockbuster novel, "Girl With a Pearl Earring."
Vermeer's paintings are currently the subject of a remarkable, sold-out exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Holland. This is the first time that this many Vermeer paintings have been exhibited in one place. Nearly a half-million tickets to the exhibit, on display from February through June, were sold in advance. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about one of the world's most remarkable painters, without having to travel to Europe!
