Art TalkProgram Description
Event Details
Join us for a Zoom talk with art lecturer Janet Cohen Mandel, as she explores the life and creative work of Ruth Orkin, credited for breaking into a field dominated by men. Ruth Orkin, born in Hollywood, California in 1921, was an award-winning photojournalist and filmmaker. In 1931, when she was 10 years old, she received her first camera, a 39-cent Univex, and soon began experimenting by taking photographs of her friends and teachers at school. She moved to New York in 1943 and launched an impressive career capturing iconic images of people and places, her work appearing in The New York Times, Look, Life, and Ladies Home Journal magazines.
Orkin often said that film, music, and travel inspired her, and all of that came together in her photography. The subject of innumerable exhibitions and honors in her lifetime, Ruth Orkin’s legacy continues to this day.
Janet Cohen Mandel is an award-winning teacher and art lecturer who is a frequent presenter for the Guilderland Public Library.
